This Is How We Do It

Operating System 1.0

An iterative framework for evolving brands through strategic nonconformity and rigorous innovation.

Intro

I've spent two decades watching organizations frantically optimize for efficiency while simultaneously lamenting their lack of innovation — as if creativity were something you could schedule between lunch and the 2pm all-hands.

The Error Dome Operating System 1.0 emerged from a much simpler truth: our human irregularities aren't implementation flaws; they're evolutionary features.

This framework isn't another manifesto (we've all suffered through enough of those), but rather a recalibration of what we value when building systems — prioritizing the generative power of intelligent error over the diminishing returns of endless optimization.

Consider it an acknowledgment that the most powerful operating system isn't silicon-based but neurology-based, with all the contradiction, insight, and productive tension that implies.

FOOTNOTES

  1. We also believe in not saying “We believe …” about every g*sh d*rn thing we believe. We believe that’s f*dging lazy, clichéd manifesto b*wl sh*rt.

  2. Statisticians in the crowd will likely scoff at this oversimplification, but I've found it's just precise enough to be useful without becoming precious about methodology. The threshold for pattern recognition isn't actually three — it's whatever number gets you to pay attention.

  3. This has been my bedrock/fallback methodology for ±40 years. Consider it the less maternal/more dirtbag spiritual successor to “Necessity Is the Mother of Invention.”

  4. Not a sponsor but HMU.

  5. Ask anyone who's had to reconstruct their creative process after sobriety, or rebuild neural pathways after diagnosis. Continuity is overrated. Adaptation is everything.

Outro

If you've read all of the tenets of the OS and find yourself thinking, “Intriguing principles, but how exactly does one implement this without setting everything on fire?" — you're asking precisely the right question.

The principles outlined here are intentionally philosophical rather than prescriptive. They're meant to recalibrate perspective before attempting to reconfigure process.

That said, The Error Dome Operating System 1.1: The Implementation Update is currently being assembled from the various beautiful mistakes I've made while testing these principles in the wild. It will feature actual methodologies, decision frameworks, and diagnostic tools for transforming these concepts from provocative notions into practical approaches.

Until then, perhaps start by examining which “best practices" in your organization exist primarily to prevent creative error rather than enable meaningful evolution.
